The Red Sea is the diving world's best-value miracle: 300+ days of sunshine, water that hits 29°C in summer, walls covered in vivid coral, the most photogenic wrecks on the planet, and prices that haven't kept up with the Caribbean. I've done five Egyptian Red Sea liveaboards and a single Sudanese trip — here's the entire region distilled.
Why the Red Sea Is Special
A 1,900-km long arm of warm, salty, oligotrophic water between Africa and Arabia. The salinity makes water clear; the warmth and stable conditions create staggeringly dense coral coverage. North you get the wrecks of Egypt's Suez approaches. South you get reef sharks, hammerheads and oceanic mantas at the offshore reefs.
The Five Sub-Regions
1. Northern Egypt — Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada
Ras Mohammed National Park (Shark and Yolanda Reef), the Strait of Tiran's seven reefs, Dahab's Blue Hole and Canyon, plus easy access to the wrecks. Largest dive infrastructure in the Red Sea.
2. The Iconic Wrecks (Northern Egypt)
- SS Thistlegorm — 1941 British cargo ship sunk with motorbikes, trucks, ammunition. The world's #1 wreck dive.
- SS Rosalie Moller — Larger, deeper, less crowded than Thistlegorm.
- SS Dunraven — Reef sharks live nearby; intact engine room.
- Abu Nuhas reef wrecks — Carnatic, Giannis D, Chrisoula K, Kimon M. Four wrecks in a kilometre.
3. Brothers Islands, Daedalus, Elphinstone (Egypt south)
Offshore pinnacles. Oceanic whitetips, hammerheads, thresher sharks. Liveaboard-only. Calmer May-September.
4. Sudan
The Red Sea as it was 30 years ago — Sanganeb atoll, Sha'ab Rumi (Cousteau's Conshelf 2), Angarosh, Merlo. Less traffic, more sharks. Liveaboard from Port Sudan.
5. Saudi Arabia
Newly accessible since 2019. Yanbu, Farasan Banks, Al Lith. Reef structure is closer to early Egypt — pristine, lightly dived. Liveaboards expanding rapidly.
Marine Life Calendar
| Species | Where | When |
|---|---|---|
| Hammerhead schools | Daedalus | Jun-Aug |
| Oceanic whitetips | Brothers, Elphinstone | Oct-Dec |
| Thresher sharks | Brothers | Year-round, peak summer |
| Whale sharks | Marsa Alam coast, offshore | May-Aug |
| Manta rays (oceanic) | South Sudan, deep south | Variable |
| Dolphins (resident) | Sataya, Samadai | Year-round |
Best Time to Dive
- April-June, September-November: Mild air (24-32°C), ideal water (24-28°C), calm seas.
- July-August: Hot air (40°C+), bath-like water (29-30°C). Daedalus hammerhead season.
- December-February: Cooler (water 22-24°C), some wind, oceanic whitetip season.
Liveaboard or Land-Based?
Land-based for the northern wrecks and Sharm/Hurghada day boats — workable, well-priced. Liveaboard for the offshore reefs (Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone, Sudan, Saudi). The latter aren't realistic from a hotel.
| Format | Avg cost (week) | Pros |
|---|---|---|
| Egypt land + dive package | USD 700-1,400 | Cheapest, family-friendly, easy logistics |
| Egypt liveaboard | USD 1,200-2,800 | Reach offshore reefs, 18-22 dives |
| Sudan liveaboard | USD 2,400-3,800 | Pristine, sharky, exclusive |
| Saudi liveaboard | USD 3,000-5,500 | Untouched, premium pricing |

Skill Level Requirements
Northern reefs and most wrecks: Open Water. SS Thistlegorm: AOW recommended (29m max). Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone: AOW + 50 dives + Nitrox highly recommended. Sudan and Saudi: AOW + 100 dives, often Deep specialty.
What to Pack
- 5mm full wetsuit + hood for winter; 3mm for summer.
- Reef hook (some sites have current).
- SMB and finger spool — the offshore reefs require them.
- Underwater torch for wreck penetration.
- Backup mask. Wreck environments eat them.
- Nitrox certification card if you have one.
The Hidden Cost Trap
Egyptian liveaboards advertise low prices but bolt on extras: Nitrox (USD 100-180/wk), park fees (USD 90-130), single-supplement, equipment rental, drinks. Always price fully loaded.
Beyond Diving
Pyramids and Cairo (1-hour flight from Sharm/Hurghada), Petra/Jordan crossings via ferry to Aqaba, Wadi El Gemal desert, Mount Sinai. The Red Sea is the easiest dive destination to bolt onto a once-in-a-lifetime cultural trip.
Sustainability
The Egyptian Red Sea has been heavily dived for 50 years. Choose operators with eco-credentials, never anchor on coral, and avoid feeding fish (still common, still bad).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Red Sea safe for travel right now?
The southern Red Sea around Yemen has shipping risk, but tourist liveaboards operate well north of any risk zone. Egyptian and Sudanese tourism areas remain low-risk. Check government advisories before booking.
What's the cheapest week of Red Sea diving?
Off-season Egyptian land-based packages from Hurghada start at USD 700/week with diving and accommodation. Hard to beat anywhere on Earth.
Is the SS Thistlegorm worth the hype?
Yes. It's one of the few dives where the gap between expectation and reality goes the right way.
Can I see hammerheads on a regular liveaboard?
At Daedalus in summer (June-August), reliably. Brothers Islands are more variable. The southern Egyptian routes are your best shot.
What about diving in winter?
Excellent for oceanic whitetip sharks at Brothers and Elphinstone. Bring a 7mm with hood and gloves — surface intervals get cold even when water is 22°C.
