Diving in Bali: The 2026 Guide to Sites, Seasons and Operators

Bali is the rare destination where you can see a USAT Liberty wreck before breakfast, a mola mola at noon, and a frogfish hunt by torchlight at midnight — all without changing islands. After a dozen trips here as a divemaster, I'll walk you through the regions, when each is firing, and how to dodge the rookie mistakes that ruin Bali dive trips.

Bali's USAT Liberty — one of the world's most accessible great wrecks.

Why Dive Bali

Bali sits inside the Coral Triangle. Its surrounding waters host more fish species than the entire Caribbean. It also has unmatched logistics: cheap flights, a tourism industry that absorbs every budget, easy land transfers between dive regions, and English-speaking dive guides everywhere.

The Five Dive Regions

Tulamben (Northeast)

Home of the USAT Liberty wreck — 120m American cargo ship sitting in 5-30m of water, 30 metres from a black-sand beach. Walk in. Schooling jacks at dawn, batfish, bumphead parrotfish at dusk. Coral-encrusted, very photogenic.

Amed (Northeast, south of Tulamben)

Volcanic black-sand bays, gentle reefs, the Japanese wreck, and Jemeluk Bay. Less crowded than Tulamben, ideal for relaxed shore diving.

Padang Bai (East coast, gateway to Lembongan)

Blue Lagoon, Jepun, Mimpang. Reef sharks, schooling fish, occasional eagle rays. Bali's classic boat-diving hub.

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan (Southeast islands)

Manta Point — manta cleaning station year-round. Crystal Bay — mola mola (oceanic sunfish) season July-October. Strong, cold currents on the south side. Advanced certification recommended.

Menjangan Island (Northwest)

National park sites with walls, soft corals, anchor wrecks. Calmer than other regions, well-suited for beginners. Often paired with Pemuteran's Reef Project (rebuilt coral gardens).

Seasons and Conditions

  • April-October (dry): Best vis (15-30m), calmer surface, mola mola season Jul-Oct.
  • November-March (wet): Greener inshore, vis 8-20m, fewer crowds, manta rays still reliable.
  • Crystal Bay can hit 18°C in mola mola season — 5mm wetsuit minimum.

Skill Levels and Site Matching

Open Water Friendly

  • USAT Liberty (mostly under 18m)
  • Menjangan walls (mild current)
  • Amed shore reefs
  • Padang Bai easy sites (Blue Lagoon)

Advanced Recommended

  • All Nusa Penida sites (current, cold, depth)
  • Mimpang, Tepekong (current)
  • Mola mola hunts at Crystal Bay (cold + depth)

Sample 7-Day Bali Dive Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Denpasar, transfer to Tulamben. Acclimatise.
  • Day 2: USAT Liberty dawn dive + 2 reef dives. Coral garden, drop-off.
  • Day 3: Tulamben muck (Seraya, Melasti). Frogfish, blue-ringed octopus.
  • Day 4: Transfer to Padang Bai. 2 boat dives at Blue Lagoon and Mimpang.
  • Day 5: Day trip to Nusa Penida — Manta Point + Crystal Bay.
  • Day 6: Second Penida day — Toyapakeh + Sental. Or Lembongan reef.

Operators and Pricing

Bali pricing is among the best value in Indonesia. Reputable operators charge:

  • 2-tank boat dive with gear: USD 75-110
  • 3-dive day at Penida (with lunch, transfers): USD 120-160
  • Open Water course: USD 380-500
  • Advanced Open Water: USD 320-450

The cheapest shops cut corners on tank servicing, instructor ratios and safety equipment. Pay the extra USD 20/dive for a PADI 5-star or SSI Diamond centre.

Where to Stay

  • Tulamben/Amed: Stay locally — beach bungalows USD 25-90/night, dive shops in walking distance.
  • Padang Bai: Small village vibe, USD 30-150 hotels.
  • Nusa Lembongan: Live on the island for best Penida access. USD 50-300 villas.
  • Pemuteran (NW): Sleepy beach, ideal Menjangan base.
  • Sanur/Ubud: Day-trip to dive sites — workable but adds 1-2 hours each way.

Beyond Diving

Surf Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Keramas (April-October), trek Mount Batur for sunrise, kayak the rice terraces of Tegallalang, eat at Sundara, drink at La Brisa Canggu. Bali is the rare dive destination where the surface interval lifestyle is the headline.

Common Bali Diving Mistakes

  • Underestimating Penida currents. They're real. Hooks, SMBs and a strong fitness level matter.
  • Not bringing a 5mm wetsuit. Crystal Bay shocks unprepared divers.
  • Diving USAT Liberty at peak hours. Go at sunrise or sunset for fewer crowds and better fish.
  • Ignoring the mola mola briefing. Approach slowly from below; never block the cleaning station.
  • Booking everything from a Kuta-based broker. Cut out the middleman, deal direct with the dive resort.

Combining Bali with Other Destinations

  • Bali + Komodo — fly to Labuan Bajo, 4-5 day liveaboard, fly back.
  • Bali + Raja Ampat — domestic flight via Sorong; the dive trip of dreams.
  • Bali + Lombok / Gili — beach hop, surf, snorkel turtles.

Book Your Bali Diving

  • PADI — Bali 5-star dive centres.
  • GetYourGuide — Bali day dive trips, snorkel tours, intro dives.
  • Viator — packaged dive holidays and Penida day trips.
